Project Zero 4: The Fatal Frame We Nearly Didn't Get

At this point, the Fatal Frame series has cemented itself as a real contender in the survival horror space, but the industry had changed a lot since the release of Fatal Frame 3 on the PS2. Now, Nintendo's Wii was running the show in terms of video game innovation, and like most series, Project Zero couldn't escape a brush with motion controls. So Tecmo quietly developed Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (AKA) Fatal Frame 4 on the Wii and never officially released to any English speaking market. Luckily we have an English fan translation of that original Japanese version to allow us to really get a look at what we were missing out on, but earlier last year, we actually got a full HD remaster of the game. So we'll of course be looking at the modern 4k, PS5 release of the game and comparing it to the original. Hope you guys are strapped in for a lot of waggle mechanics and ghost hunting because that is precisely what you're in for.

The last time this survival horror dynasty would be able to squeeze itself out of a Playstation 2's video out port. And that means a few things. Chiefly, that this entry was going to have to be somethin...
Fatal Frame 2: Satisfyingly Refined

When the first Fatal Frame title was released, it was sorely needed by survival horror fans like myself. And since it was the first entry in (what was soon to become a) franchise, a lot of us gave it a lot of slack in some areas we might not have been so understanding about otherwise. With the release of its sequel, now we get to see what this team can deliver with both the benefit of more mone...

    "That you could be forgiven for considering Resident Evil 7 as survivor horror". Man. I like your videos-I really do-but throwing around your personal opinions as irrefutable facts while belittling every other reviewer and RE fan that doesn't agree, along with your tendancy towards condescending remarks can really drag down what would otherwise be a fantastic video.

    I don't agree with this message he's bringing up about blaming the fans who loved RE 4 for how RE 6 turned out even though as he said it was negatively received by said fans. For context, my favorite RE game is RE1 remake followed by RE4. I don't see anything wrong with enjoying a franchise through multiple genres or tones. In my opinion RE4 was a fun twist that shook up the series, like a music artist that releases an album with a much different sound. That was about as much action as I cared for in my RE game though, so I never bought anything past that. You have a great pizza place you love. You always get the meat lovers, but one day they made a really popular salad and now they no longer sell pizza, only salads. You don't dislike salads, but you went there for pizza and just want that. Then they start making salads that lots of people dislike. I'd be upset my favorite pizza place isn't serving what I want anymore, but where do you put the blame? Is there any at all?

    If you ever actually played any role in creating video assets you’d know that the process is extremely time consuming. Reducing the quality of insignificant visual assets not only saves on performance requirements but also allows devs to focus on more important game mechanics. I dig your videos but you are be very picky when it comes to criticizing some low resolution textures on background assets that are also in a dark area lol

    I’ve just reached the part of the video where you mentioned that you haven’t played control yet. For me it was key to finish before Alan Wake 2 as it has Alan Wake specific DLC. My theory is the the current Remedyverse have all Stemmed from Alans Writing in the Darkplace and have been attempts to facilitate his escape. But of course that’s just a my interpretation. Also in terms of Alan Wake 2, i honestly thought that Sagas daughter was actually dead, Alan needed a hero, he wrote in Saga ( though Tor and Odin complicate this more since they clearly know Saga and Tor is Family) and all of the endgame reality points to her being dead.

    Ah, I waited years hoping that the game would have an English language official release. A couple of years ago I bit the bullet and decided to import a used copy from America to be delivered to the UK and I also bought a secondary cheap Wii for the purposes of soft modding. I successfully soft modded the Wii, but I was met with a black screen and as it turned out the instructions I was following would not work on a PAL Wii. Somehow I managed to get the game working after downloading some programs on the modded Wii that made the console think it was NSTC. It was worth all that hassle!

    The PS3 gives you the option to disable the smoothing while emulating PS1 games in case you don't like the smoothing filter

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews День тому

      Yeah, and I definitely had smoothing off for capturing this footage, but the PS3 naturally has a less sharp scale due to its non integer values and general lack of high powered scaling hardware onboard.

    I love this game. I love the tinny effects on the english dub. I love taking a snack break while reading through the notes. I love how every single ghost is unique and has a huge tragic backstory. I love how comforting the light of a save point can be. Fatal Frame 2 was great but the addition of grief to the horror really rewired my brain when I first played this.

    I'm sorry, but I do not understand how this is quote "one of the most confusing and poorly told stories in video game history'. Huh? I just played the game for the first time in years. I really enjoyed it, and I understood what was going on...so what was so confusing about it? It clearly details in notes and cut-scenes as to what is happening. I would say this is less confusing of a story than even the original Silent Hill game. I thought this easily had the Best Story in the franchise. 'it's not like the other games'...Silent Hill 2 wasn't like Silent Hill 1, but was that bad? No. Silent Hill 1 is "you saving your daughter from a cult". The 2nd game was a 'psychological spiral'. On that front...Silent Hill 4 is more 'Silent Hill OG' than Silent Hill 2 was (you're dealing with the ideals of a cult, a God of sort ready to be born through a ritual, all the while trying to save someone....Harry to save Cheryl, Henry to save Eileen). The load times aren't 'long' or were never a bother. The doors in Resident Evil had 'longer load times' each time you opened a door. The 'meters on top' weren't distracting. Most people won't even notice after 5 minutes of playing. To each their own. I get it, it's your opinion and we all have different ones. But this review was just incredibly Puzzling to me. Agree to disagree.

    The Wii version was the first FF game I played and I loved every second of it. I didn't mind the controls too much. I enjoyed the combat system, the graphics, the story, the atmosphere and the sound design. Since you didn't seem to have played the Wii version to the end, it has 6 different endings, some of them pretty harsh, only 2 of them are somewhat "good endings". I also don't recall enemies being invulnerable or the 3 kids being that difficult in this version, maybe they changed it.

    57:05 I bought the switch port and completed it 100% The game runs mostly at 30 fps with dips in certain areas, but I don't think the performance is bad at all. You can basically play it in a similar fashion to the original, while using 2 joycons. What I don't get though, is that the switch version seems to have been overly sharpened and also has a quite aggressive grain filter over the image. Worst however, during cutscenes, for some reason, there seems to be a second grain filter on top of the already existing one, which gives the cutscenes a very ugly look. I tried to counter that by turning the sharpness on my TV all the way down. Kinda ticks me off, you can't simply turn it off entirely... Anyway, I wished they would remaster the 2nd game too. Would gladly buy and complete it again. It's my favourite.
